How to Throw a Dinner Party (+budget saving tips)

I love dinner parties. There’s just something about your friends sitting around a table or mingling in your cozy backyard that feels right. While of course I thrive when I’m putting together all the little details to bring a party to life, I know not everyone does. Even small gatherings can make people feel like they’d rather just…not. I’m going to put your mind at ease with everything you need to know about throwing a dinner party.

Pick a Theme

I don’t mean you need to have a theme party per-say (although if you want to go all out and wear costumes, I’m not going to stop you)! Your theme could be food related: tapas or oysters. Around a specific time of year: galentine’s or winter wonderland. Or even an item like a new book. Whatever you choose, this will help you stay cohesive and make it easier when planning the rest of the elements. It will also help give people guidance if you’re asking them to bring something.

Use What You Have

When people think of planning an event, they immediately think they need to rent plates, glasses and utensils. You probably have more at home than you think. Have a baking sheet? Use it for a gathering board! Don’t have enough platters? Use butcher paper and place food directly on the table.

Old liquor or wine bottles are a great alternative to serve water, or even use as a vase.

Keep it Simple

Unlike weddings and larger events where it’s really necessary to have more than enough glassware so guests can keep exchanging, keep it simple at home. Opt for one glass for guests to use throughout the night (thrift stores are great places to find them on the cheap!), or buy one pack of compostables. Add some fun with stickers and markers so people can keep track of their cup for the evening. You could also get fun (reusable) straws in various colors as a way for people to hang onto their own! Another great option is to stick with individual bottles and cans.

Less is More

When it comes to decorating, choose a few key elements and stick to those. Flowers can get pricey and aren’t the only way to make a space look beautiful. If you aren’t in the market to own new table pieces, you can get creative with things you don’t have to keep. Citrus fruit and pomegranates make awesome centerpieces. Shells are other accessible items that can really jazz up a table (oyster shell place cards anyone?!). Sometimes, all you need is a pretty table runner and candles. You can buy pieces of gauzy fabric from a fabric store on the cheap.

Ditch the Paper Invites

E-vites are the perfect alternative for a dinner party! Paperless Post has endless free options to choose from. It’s also an easy way to keep track of RSVPS.

Prep Ahead

Your guests came to see you, so don’t find yourself in the kitchen all night. If you’re preparing the food yourself, make things that can sit at room temperature or are ready to go aside from a quick pop in the oven. You can even make items like dressings the night before.

When hiring a chef or caterer, work collaboratively to create a menu you’re happy with and let them execute. Purchasing paper to-go boxes is a great idea if you want guests to be able to bring leftovers home.

Hopefully these tips help you prepare! If you’re still stuck or simply don’t have the time, let me help you plan your next dinner party.
