How to Dress for Your Micro Wedding
Figuring out the perfect dress for any wedding is hard (hello one million gorgeous options?!), but it’s become increasingly harder during the pandemic. Dress companies are experiencing delays and backups due to overseas production and even when dresses do come in, couples may still want to save their original dress for a bigger, postponed wedding. Not only that, but you just may have a change of heart when it comes to your outfit if you’re planning for a pared down affair.
So, that brings us to today’s topic: how to dress for your micro wedding. I’ve recently connected with simple dress expert Fiona Liu of à toi studio to get some thoughts intimate wedding outfits. Fiona created à toi when she was planning her own intimate rooftop wedding, as she didn’t want anything too traditional and wasn’t finding anything she connected with. She said “I wanted to live my wedding night memories through re-wearing my outfit over and over again for special occasions”. I’ve got to tell you—I love this notion. I adored my wedding dress and often think about what a shame it is that I’ll never get to wear it again.
Fiona creates her pieces with removable items like an embroidered lace train so that the outfit can live on in a less bridal way post-wedding. If this idea wasn’t cool enough already, a few things make it even cooler. Everything is designed and produced in New York City and turn around time for made-to-measure pieces is two weeks! Additionally, these pieces can actually be rented if you aren’t interested in purchasing.
Here are some styling tips for different types of intimate weddings:
Rooftops
Rooftop weddings typically boast an incredible view so wearing something that stands out and is a little more dramatic makes sense. The Natalie dress has detachable bows and train for the extra drama, or remove them for an understated look that’s totally chic.
For rooftops, think windproof looks. Hair that’s pinned back, a casual jean or leather jacket for evenings, and stud earrings.
Backyards & Parks
The last thing you want on grassy areas is a dress that’s dragging. Both the Ambar slip dress and Lynette jumpsuit are perfect for this type of occasion.
For venues with mostly grass, wearing a block heel, wedge or flats may be your best bet. Go all out with statement earrings or lean into the nature setting with flowers in your hair.
Courthouse
Maybe you have a casual dress already but are searching for that extra something to dress it up? I am super into the Carrie blazer that nods to minimalism and elegance.
The beauty of a City Hall wedding is that you can really write your own rules and a blazer just seems like it fits with this kind of celebration. If you’re going for a more casual look with a blazer, opt for dressier shoes and lots of jewelry.
